The streets of Lyon

It was a cloudy start to the day but by the time we reached Lyon the sun was out again and we all jumped off the coach to meet our Local Guide Maree-Claire. She took us on a walking tour of Basilica Notre Dame which sits above ancient Roman ruins on Fourvière hill. Maree-Claire told us that no matter where you go in Lyon it’s likely you’ll be able to spot the basilica, which explains why it’s the symbol of the city.

We were also treated to another Hidden Treasure. Marie our Travel Director showed us the way along the ancient streets of old town Lyon. Centuries ago, these small streets were hidden alley ways that veered off the main drag to connect the locals. We would’ve never found this on our own and we have Marie to thank for. She even knew the code for a secret door, but I’ll keep that one a mystery!

My Trafalgar adventure begins!

At Trafalgar, we’re constantly looking for ways to make your holiday as memorable as can be, so from time to time we like to join you and experience what it’s like as a guest.

For the next week or so I’ll be sharing with you my adventures as I hit the road on a Highlights of France & Spain itinerary.

After arriving in Paris and settling into our hotel I met our Travel Director, Marie to chat about the week ahead. Marie was born in Normandy and has been with Trafalgar for six years. Her knowledge is incredible and I’m sure she’ll have some great inside tips on discovering France. I was surprised to see the mix of people that I’ll be travelling with and I’m looking forward to hearing all their stories as the week goes on.

In the evening we checked out Moulin Rouge. It was great to see that as a Trafalgar guest we didn’t have to wait in the long line. We all went straight to the front, our reserved seats ready complete with chilled wine and champagne – talk about VIP treatment!

For someone who’s not really into the whole theatre scene I thought it was absolutely brilliant! From enjoying great French cuisine to being entertained by the amazing sets and talented dancers – it’s really nothing like I’ve ever seen before.

If tomorrow is anything like today, then we’re all in for a real treat!

On the UNESCO Trail with Trafalgar

When the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – more commonly referred to as UNESCO – created a list of sites worldwide which it deemed to be of special physical or cultural importance, it provided the keen traveller with an unrivalled list of must-visit destinations. Here are just a handful of them which you can visit with Trafalgar…

Rome, Italy – Historic Centre

Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country in the world, and there are few places better than the capital, Rome, for visiting sites of supreme cultural importance. Officially founded in 753BC, Rome’s fascinating and staggeringly rich history is evident around every corner.  Explore this incredible city, along with other UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Tuscan cities of Pisa, Florence, Siena and San Gimignano, on a Trafalgar tour of Italy.

Quebec, Canada – Old District

Founded by a 17th century French explorer, the fascinating Canadian city of Quebec is the only city on the continent of North America which retains its old ramparts and defensive works. With the winding streets of its Old Town district, an imposing location on the St Lawrence River, and French as its local language, Quebec offers a unique and surprising cultural experience. You can see it for yourself on a tour of Canada.

Lisbon, Portugal – Belem Tower

Visit the sun-soaked city of Lisbon on a tour of Portugal and marvel at the iconic Belem Tower, long seen as a symbol of Portuguese power.  Its significant role in Portuguese maritime discoveries, along with its excellence as an example of the Manueline architectural style, secured it a place on the prestigious UNESCO list in 1983.

Hawaii, USA – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

America’s 50th State is famed for the idyllic tropical beaches which frame its beautiful Pacific islands, but it’s also noted for its dramatic geology – a fact acknowledged by the status of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Boasting two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, Hawaii is the ideal destination if you’ve always wanted to witness lava flows and volcanic eruptions at first hand. A Trafalgar tour of Hawaii even allows you the rare opportunity to walk through an actual lava tube!

Bath, England – City of Bath

It’s difficult to say whether the genteel city of Bath in England is more famous for its superb Georgian architecture or for the wonderfully preserved Roman baths which give the city its name. Either way, it’s the ideal place to enjoy afternoon tea in the same beautiful environs enjoyed and immortalised by Jane Austen and to brush up on your Roman history at the same time. Continuing on the Roman theme, on a Trafaglar tour of Britain you can also head north to see another UNESCO World Heritage Site – the mighty Hadrian’s Wall.

Delphi, Greece – Archaeological Site of Delphi

Stunning mountains provide the setting for the revered UNESCO World Heritage site of Delphi in Greece. In ancient times, Delphi was famous for its Oracle of Apollo, with Greek rulers sending envoys from far and wide to consult the Oracle and determine their fate. You can now explore its majestic ruins as part of a tour of Greece, during which you can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Olympia, home to the original Olympic Games, and the impressive Acropolis in Athens.

A true Trafalgar love story!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’ll come as no surprise to you that we’ve been struck by the Cupid’s bow here at Trafalgar. After all, it’s with Trafalgar that you can rediscover the romance of travel! But it may surprise you that sometimes Trafalgar guests have a romantic story of their own to tell. Read on for a lovely true love story about two Trafalgar guests and how they discovered romance on a Trafalgar tour in Italy. We do love a happy ending!

Holiday romance

Travel lovers Andrew and April Wood had never met before they booked onto their Italian Experience holiday with Trafalgar in March 2007, and neither of them could ever have guessed what the tour had in store for them! Living on the other side of the world from each other (Andy was living in Yorkshire at the time and April is from Baltimore in Maryland), they were both new to the Trafalgar experience and had booked their Italian Experience for very different reasons. April had agreed to go on the Trafalgar holiday with her Aunt so they could keep each other company, but Andy’s reason for taking the tour wasn’t quite so coincidental – Andy was actually best friends with the Travel Agent who booked the tour, Geoff Monk. As it was Geoff who introduced Andy to Trafalgar, it is to Geoff the happy couple owe their thanks!

Italian Experience: trip of a lifetime

Geoff says of the Trafalgar romance, ‘I’ve known Andy for 35 years, since school, so of course I was both amazed and delighted how this worked out!’  Geoff tells us about how the idea for Andy to take a Trafalgar tour came about. ‘We were both on a skiing holiday in Banff in November 2006 and whilst we were there, Andy told me he’d always wanted to explore Italy in more depth, and he wondered if I could recommend one of the tours. We looked at Trafalgar’s website and booked it whilst we were in Banff through my UK agency.’ Little did he know, Andy was booking himself a life-changing holiday that afternoon! So that’s how Andy’s story starts, but what about April’s?

Wedding bells

We spoke to the loved-up April Wood about how it all began. ‘During the holiday, our Tour Director was Chris Daley, whose professionalism and wit made us instantly realise that as a group, we were all going to be great friends. Then, as the tour progressed, we formed smaller groups in our free time in the evening. By the time we got to Florence, Andy and I just knew! Cupid had done his magic. On the last day, we were inseparable. We can only say that when you have found ‘that’ person, you instantly just know.’  But unlike the average holiday romance, April and Andy were determined to stay in touch. April says, ‘We kept in contact daily after the trip and I visited England for a short visit in May 2007 – by August I had moved to England to be near Andy! We were married in September 2007 at the beautiful Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island. Geoff and his wife attended! We also decided that Florence was so magical for us, that we returned to that wonderful city for our honeymoon. We even returned to the Meditteraneo Hotel where we stayed on the holiday and put up a sign in the lobby next to the Trafalgar information board to say we had met on this Tour!’ Visitors to the Meditteraneao Hotel should look out for that…

Trafalgar tour buddies

You can imagine how happy the other Trafalgar guests from April and Andy’s Italian Experience holiday must have been. April tell us about their reaction once they broke the news to their fellow Trafalgar tour buddies. ‘Because we had all became friends on the Italian Experience holiday I immediately emailed everyone of our great news. They were all so excited and happy for us, and we received so many messages back saying things like, ‘we were watching the chemistry between you two’, and ‘we were making bets on whether you would get together’, and best of all, ‘just goes to show, when you agree to travel, you never know where your journey will ultimately lead.’ Looking back on the heart-warming tale, Andy’s best friend and Travel Agent Geoff says, ‘They might never have met before, but they just clicked when they met on the tour and by the time they reached Florence, there was definitely romance in the air.’ Well, it’s not every day you hear a story like that, is it?

April’s still over the moon and says, ‘Thank you Trafalgar… I knew the trip would change my life, but had no idea just how much! It is so nice for us to be able to finally tell our romantic tale to the world!’  Whether it’s down to Cupid’s bow, or the unique and authentic experiences that travelling with an insider provides, Trafalgar certainly helped Andy and April discover romance in this true Trafalgar love story. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Travel to Italy for Valentine’s Day on a Simply Italy tour departing February 13th 2011.

Best cities to celebrate Burns Night in Scotland

Slip into something tartan and prepare for a hearty meal of haggis, because tonight is Burns Night! 25th of January is Burns Night – the anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns (1759 – 96),  which isn’t just celebrated in Scotland but across the whole world. This year is even more special as 2011 is the 25th anniversary of Burns Night, so wherever you are in Scotland there is bound to be various events and celebrations going on near you such as traditional ceilidhs and delicious Burns Suppers. Here’s our pick of the top Burns Night events in some of Scotland’s most exciting cities.

Alloway

If you’d prefer to learn more about Robert Burns before you raise a glass, the Official Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is now open in Alloway, Ayrshire, and this is the place to head for extensive history and fascinating facts surrounding Robert Burns, such as manuscripts and personal artefacts, which helped make the man we cherish for poems such as, ‘To A Louse’, ‘Tam O Shanter’, ‘To A Haggis’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Aberdeen

Head to the University of Aberdeen for a special Burns evening, whereby Sheena Blacklaw and Derick McClure present ‘ The Ploughman Songmaker’, and all for just £3.

St. Andrews

Burns Night with Daimh takes place in St. Andrew’s Byre Theatre, and you can expect a traditional evening where much merriment will ensue. Tuck into some haggis, of which Robert Burns himself called the ‘great chieftain o’ the puddin’-race’.

Edinburgh

Burns: Rough Cut takes place tonight at Brunton Theatre where, for £11 you can expect a traditional supper of venison pie and scotch broth soup followed by a very ‘raw and edgy’ performance of Robert Burns’s diaries.

Raise your glass of Scotch whiskey to Robert Burns, and remember the Scottish bard with the poignancy and passion of a true Scot!

Visit the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at London’s Natural History Museum

This weekend I was lucky enough to visit the Natural History Museum in London to see the brilliant Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. As a big animal fan, for me, the winning and commended images from the 2010 competition were simply stunning.

From a disused house in Finland that has been overrun with adorable squirrels, owls and a badger family that were born under the floorboards and use the fireplace as a front door, to ariel shots of vast swathes of manta rays and more, the exhibition was incredibly inspiring.

Whether you’re a keen traveller looking to admire desolate snowscapes and arty mountain shots, or you’re a huge wildlife fan, you’re sure to be blown away by the amazing talent on show at the exhibition. Most impressive was the collections of photos by the youngest category, the ‘under 10s’. That’s right, some of these staggering images are by very young photographers, and the Overall Young Photographer Winner was in that very youngest category!

The winning photo was of leaf-cutter ants in Costa Rica, taken by Bence Mate from Hungary and can be viewed here. Although the winning group of photos are striking, I highly recommend a trip to the Natural History Museum to appreciate all of the entrants. And if you can’t get to London? Easy, just visit the Wildlife Photographer of the Year online gallery.

What do you think of the winners and commended photos? Let us know below!

Prince William and Kate’s royal wedding: top London spots

Wouldn’t you just love to be in London on 29th April 2011 for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding?  Well you can count on Trafalgar to be right in the centre of the action. Since the announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement we’ve been so excited here at Trafalgar Towers that we’ve already chosen our top London spots to be on the day, and have hand-picked a list of London tours that will mean you’ll be in London for the special day.  You can’t blame us for getting caught up in all the fun -  after all, we can almost see Buckingham Palace from the office!

If you’re thinking of travelling to Europe or England in April, then it’s worth timing your visit to conincide with the royal wedding, as the date is sure to be a day of pomp and pageantry like no other. So here is a list of tours that start or end in London on the 29th April 2011 so you can be at one of the biggest Royal London parties of our time!

London Week (The Cumberland hotel)

London Week (The Hilton Olympia hotel)

London Week (Thistle Euston hotel)

OK, so you’ve booked on to a tour so you’ll be in London for the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. But it’s all about being in the right place, at the right time. That’s where we come in! Here’s our top spots to grab for the best views of the Royal Wedding.

Westminster Abbey

It might be almost un-reachable on the day, but the wedding will take place at Westminster Abbey, so head that way if you can.

Westminster Abbey has hosted many royal coronations, weddings and funerals over the years, such as  William’s grandmother’s (Queen Elizabeth II) who was  married in Westminster Abbey in 1947. Sadly, Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana, also had her funeral here on 6 September 1997, so Westminster Abbey holds even more importance for the happy couple.
Buckingham Palace

Kate may begin the procession to Westminster Abbey from Buckingham Palace (before travelling along The Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square which are prime spots for the best views). Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the monarchy since 1837. The couple will return here after they are married, for the Queen’s reception and a private dinner party in the evening, to be held by Prince Charles.
Wherever you congregate on 29th April 2011, one thing’s for sure; you’ll be in London on one of the most important days in recent Royal history, allowing you an unforgettable experience to share with your loved ones for years to come.
Will you be in London for the Royal Wedding?
Are you excited about the big day?
What do you think about the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton?
We’d love to know your opinion! Comment below and let us know; we’ll tweet the best responses!
