A natural phenomenon in Chichen Itza, Mexico

Every year in September, hundreds of visitors come together during the autumn equinox at Chichen Itza, Mexico to watch a spectacle of shadow and light on the steps of El Castillo (Kukulkan pyramid).

Equinox, meaning equal night, is the time of year when the hours of day and night are the same. This only happens once in autumn and again in late March, known as the spring equinox. The iconic Mayan archaeological site of Chichen Itza is the only place in the world where you can see the natural phenomenon come to life.

Late in the afternoon the sun projects triangles of light created by the angle of the sun and the northern edges of the pyramid’s steps. Simulating a snake-like effect, the shadow gradually descends to the jaws of the serpent’s head carved at the base of the pyramid, leaving onlookers awestruck. Ancient Mayan legend believes this is the Kukulkan serpent making his way to the Well of Sacrifice nearby.

This year, the autumn equinox at Chichen Itza officially happens on 22 September but the spectacle can be seen a day or two either side, lasting for around 45 minutes.

Trafalgar’s Treasures of the Yucatan itinerary can take you to visit the ancient city of Chichen Itza in 2012. And you won’t have to worry about fighting the crowds to get in either, as the hotel you’ll stay in is ideally located right next to the ruins and has its own private entrance.

Discover the insider’s view with Jordan Allen

I’ve always loved to travel, but what I enjoy more is sharing my passion for travel with others. I’m Jordan Allen and I’ve been a Trafalgar Travel Director for seven years. The best part about my job is seeing guests’ eyes light up when they see something beautiful for the very first time, a truly Kodak moment!

My specialty is national parks, particularly in western USA. From exploring America’s first national park Yellowstone to admiring the vast panoramic views of the Grand Canyon and all the parks in between, you name it I’ve seen them all! If you’re a nature buff like me, you’ll love Trafalgar’s Scenic Parks Explorer which takes you on an insider’s discovery through some of the best national parks in the west including Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde and of course the Grand Canyon.

When I travel you’ll never see me without my camera and a recipe book. Why a recipe book? If you go on a Trafalgar vacation you’ll know why! We often dine with locals during our Be My Guest dining experience and this is where my book comes in handy. I can’t help but jot down cooking tips along the way because not only do you savor regional cuisine, but you also learn a lot too.

My top travel tips are:

  •  Try everything once, you might be pleasantly surprised
  • When shopping, if you see something you like snap it up and don’t think twice as you may not go back the same way, and don’t be afraid to ship it home
  • The best way to get a feel for the local way of life is to walk – you’ll notice more on foot

If you’re interested in discovering the national parks of western USA in 2012 with me or one of our other Travel Directors, visit www.trafalgar.com

Vivid colours of Vermont, New England USA

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, then you’ll love Vermont in autumn and with the change in season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to see why it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit.

People from all over the world travel to New England (northeastern US near the border of Canada), each year to see the unique bright red and gold foliage cover the meadows and mountains of Vermont. It’s the sugar maple trees that are responsible for the brilliant shades of colour and if pancakes are your weakness take note; these same trees produce the state’s most famous and biggest supply of maple syrup!

A great spot to view the autumn foliage includes Killington Peak in the Green Mountain National Forest, where you can ride the ski gondola to the top – just don’t forget your camera as the view is amazing. If you travel in the last week of September you can follow the Northeast Kingdom Foliage Festival. Each year, this week-long festival travels daily from town to town with locals showcasing a taste of ‘Old Vermont’ to visitors young and old.

Trafalgar’s Autumn Colours itinerary, which travels through the northeastern US, can take you to see this natural spectacle of colour in 2012.

The streets of Lyon

It was a cloudy start to the day but by the time we reached Lyon the sun was out again and we all jumped off the coach to meet our Local Guide Maree-Claire. She took us on a walking tour of Basilica Notre Dame which sits above ancient Roman ruins on Fourvière hill. Maree-Claire told us that no matter where you go in Lyon it’s likely you’ll be able to spot the basilica, which explains why it’s the symbol of the city.

We were also treated to another Hidden Treasure. Marie our Travel Director showed us the way along the ancient streets of old town Lyon. Centuries ago, these small streets were hidden alley ways that veered off the main drag to connect the locals. We would’ve never found this on our own and we have Marie to thank for. She even knew the code for a secret door, but I’ll keep that one a mystery!

City insider: Top 10 boutiques in Paris

On a Trafalgar tour you can expect to see all the top sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Cathedral, but if you’re going to have an unforgettable holiday in one of Europe’s most fashionable capitals, you’ll want to look the part - it is Paris Fashion Week soon after all!-  so do take advantage of Paris’s many unique boutiques.

As well as our personal favourite Paris past-times, such as taking a scenic cruise on the Seine River, admiring Impressionist art at Musée d’Orsay, a visit to the Fragonard Perfumery and Museum, and an excursion to Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles (one of the world’s grandest, with its spectacular ornamental gardens) here is our pick of the top 10 boutiques in Paris, so you can spend, spend, spend!

1. Kookai Stock, 82 rue Réaumur, 2nd, Metro Réaumur-Sébastopol, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 7.30pm.

As you’d expect from a boutique nestled in the tailoring district of Paris, Kookai Stock features a large shopping space filled with past-season garments with discounts as big as 70% off. Let the super friendly staff help you pick the perfect Parisian top for a mere €9.

2. Chanel, 31, rue Cambon. 75001, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 7pm.

It wouldn’t be right to have a top 10 shopping list for Paris without mentioning Chanel. It may be right out of most visitors price range, but a trip to Paris would not be complete without a least a short window-shop or browse of the designer brand which is the essence of chic Paris.

3. Saint-Ouen Flea Market, 140 rue des Rosiers 93400 SAINT-OUEN, Paris.
OK, it’s not quite a boutique, but Saint-Ouen Flea Market has so much to offer the shopper who has it all – for a fraction of the price. Originally the Market was a trading spot which joined Paris and Saint-Ouen in the 1800s, born when the traders grouped together to sell their curious wares. Head here for unique souvenirs and bargain vintage trinkets. It may be open every day, but weekends tend to be much busier.

4. Agnes b., 6, rue du Jour, 75001 Paris. Open Monday to Friday from 11am to 8.30pm.

For a boutique that Paris is famed for, head to the urban Agnes b., the original of which is on rue du Jour. Shunning advertising, Agnes Trouble, who started her shop in the 1970s. chooses instead to support young designers and artists through her in-house galleries, giving the Agnes b. boutique a boho feel.

5. Christian Louboutin, 38, rue de Grenelle, Paris. Open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm.

Christian Louboutin is a name we’re all familiar with, owing to the Parisian shoe designer’s oh-so-sexy yet still super comfortable high heels, which are cherished the world over. Visit the Christian Louboutin boutique in Paris to see kooky yet sumptuous style, and if you’re feeling particular caught up in the romance of Paris, perhaps you’ll purchase a pair.

6. Parfums Frederic Malle, 37, rue de Grenelle, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm and Sunday 12am – 6pm.

No trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s perfumeries, and which better boutique than one of the city’s oldest, and just over the road from Christian Louboutin. Have a spritz of the classic designer scents and you might even want to buy some as a very chic souvenir.

7. Printemps, 102 Rue de Provence, 75009, Paris. Open from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 8pm.

Printemps is by no means a secret, but many visitors to Paris may overlook the vast department store, but that would be a mistake. Printemps’s impressive art nouveau building is filled to the top with France’s favourite fashion, lifestyle and cosmetics brands. Our tip: head to the top floor cafe for unrivalled views of the Eiffel Tower.

8.  Kiliwatch, 64, Rue Tiquetonne, 75002, Paris. Open from Monday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm.

Men in tow may be yearning for a seat (or hearty French lunch) by now, but the most stylish among them are probably after a slice of Parisian style for themselves. Male shoppers should head to Kiliwatch for a great range of vintage menswear. Of course, there’s plenty of women’s vintage fashion in Kiliwatch too!

9. Monoprix, 21 Avenue Opéra, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 9pm.

If you’re on a budget during your tour of Paris but would still like to dip into the city’s effortless style, then a visit to Monoprix is essential. As ‘the French version of Marks & Spencers’,  you can expect great-value essentials that are perfect for travelling in, and are excellent quality as well as unique.

10. Comptoir des Cotonniers, 12, Place St. Sulpice, 75006 Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm.

For the ultimate in effortless Parisian chic, head to Comptoir des Cotonniers, where you’ll find elegant essentials which are at much more affordable prices than most of Paris’s famed boutiques and designer names.

After shopping in chic boutiques and elegant department stores, just sit in an outdoor café and watch the world go by – it’s just like a fashion show! And when the sun goes down, there is still more than enough to keep you busy. Parisian nightlife is truly legendary. Perhaps try a cabaret at the Nouvelle Eve or a champagne show at the Moulin Rouge or wander through the Latin Quarter and dine out in Bohemian Montmartre.

Don’t forget Giverny, the home and gardens of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet or visit Disneyland Paris located just outside the city. If you have already visited Paris, then you know why we are inviting you back to discover one of Europe’s most beautifully planned cities.

Going solo: the benefits of travelling alone

Venice Solo Traveller

Travelling alone can seem a daunting prospect for many, and understandably so.  But with Trafalgar, you needn’t worry if you want to ‘go it alone’ and embark on your travels without a spouse, family member or friend:  our memorable tours take the stress out of solo travel, and you’ll make lots of new and like-minded friends along the way.

As anybody who has done it will testify, solo travel is both liberating and invigorating.  With none of the arguments that can arise when travelling with family and close friends, you’re free to relax and enjoy your surroundings at your own pace, going where you choose, and experiencing local culture as authentically as possible.

At Trafalgar we understand your need for freedom, and we strive to strike just the right balance between time spent with our expert travel guides, who’ll show you hidden treasures that you wouldn’t normally get to see, and leisure time to spend exploring the things that interest you the most – whether with your new-found friends, or on a solitary excursion.  Perhaps you’ll want to take a second look at Michelangelo’s legendary Sistine Chapel in the Vatican on a tour of Italy, or treat yourself to a meal in a favourite Parisian restaurant on your tour of France

Perhaps one of the biggest sources of apprehension for the solo traveller is what to do in the evenings.  But with a stimulating programme of evening entertainment and meals taken with your fellow travellers, this is never a concern on a Trafalgar tour.  You might choose to attend a concert, or get closer to living life as a local with our unique ‘Be My Guest’ dining experiences, which allow you to dine as a guest in the home of a local resident, or in special dining venues.  What better way to become acquainted with Italy’s famed cuisine than on a Sorrento tour, or to experience traditional Hungarian fare on the outskirts of Budapest on a tour of Hungary?

Trafalgar tours make it easy for you to take the plunge and try solo travel, with all the expert advice you could need at your disposal and a group of friendly, like-minded travellers with you to keep loneliness firmly at bay every step of the way.

Tour Director Profile: Antonino Cacace

Tony greets his guests on a recent tour in Italy.

Trafalgar’s Tour Directors play a key role in providing each of our guests with a truly memorable experience. From the moment your vacation begins, our Tour Directors share their local knowledge and provide a personalized, one-of-a-kind insider’s view of each destination. They are experienced travelers, learned historians and culture buffs whose job is to help you become immersed in the places you visit.

If you’ve traveled with Trafalgar to Italy, chances are you probably know Antonino “Tony” Cacace. For 10 years he’s been guiding Trafalgar guests through the sites and landmarks of Italy.  Tony took a few minutes to talk to the Trafalgar Blog and share some of his experiences as a Tour Director and give some insight to why he loves what he does.

Trafalgar Blog: Which guided vacations do you host?
Tony: Over the years I’ve covered all of Trafalgar’s Italian itineraries. There are over 20 of them, some even include neighboring countries such as Greece and Switzerland.

Trafalgar Blog: Out of these, what is your favorite vacation and why?
Tony:
It’s the “Best of Italy” because it shows a variety of areas of the country and at a leisurely pace which gives guests an opportunity to experience more of the destination.

Trafalgar Blog: What is it that you love about being a Trafalgar Tour Director?
Tony:
I love being able to travel, enjoy new experiences and always be in contact with different people from all over the world. I love showing our guests the beauty of my country and learning about where they come from too.

Trafalgar Blog: What is your favorite destination/attraction to visit?
Tony:
St Mark’s Square at night, because listening to the orchestra playing music in this amazing square makes it really magical.

Trafalgar Blog: What would you say are the most surprising moments for guests while on tour?
Tony: Admiring and visiting some of the sights such as: the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, St Mark’s Square, but also our Be My Guest dinners with some of the local people. I also love watching our guests become a family with the other fellow travelers, the driver and myself.

Trafalgar Blog: Our guests have told us they love our Be My Guest program. Can you share a special moment from one of these experiences?
Tony:
One day In Florence, we were guests of a family who own this beautiful 18th-century countryside residence in the Chianti hills, and after touring the different rooms and having dinner, the lady of the house decided to let us visit the family chapel where all their important family events take place and which is usually not open to public. Everyone felt really honored to have this opportunity on top of having enjoyed a delicious home-made dinner prepared by the family just for us.

Trafalgar Blog: What is a typical day like in the life of a Tour Director?
Tony: Very busy. We are always thinking about the best way to plan the day and the next days ahead in every detail, so that everyone can achieve what they came for and things can run smoothly. We help those who might have some particular need, we entertain the group with interesting information and stories about the country, the areas we travel through and everyday life events, and we make sure that there are different options, so everyone can choose what is best for them.

Trafalgar Blog: If there is one thing you want your guests to take away from their experience, what would it be?
Tony:
To truly learn the realities of the country they are visiting and make sure they don’t miss out on what’s really important. I also hope that by the end of the trip, they’ve realized that traveling with a group is not a limitation, but an opportunity to expand their knowledge at levels they would not reach traveling alone, leaving them with strong connections with people from all over the world.

Trafalgar goes even greener for 2011

Austria MondseeWhen you pick up Trafalgar’s new 2011 Europe brochures this week, you may notice a change in the paper.  As part of its ongoing commitment to the environment,  Trafalgar, as part of The Travel Corporation, is now committed to using 100% recycled paper for the body of all its brochures. Trafalgar believes the small difference in feel and appearance is worth the huge difference this change makes to the environment. By producing brochures on recycled paper, The Travel Corporation saves more than 70,000 trees a year (based on data from the Environmental Defense Fund), reducing waste in landfills.

Producing brochures on more environmentally-friendly recycled paper is aligned with Trafalgar’s commitment to sustainable tourism and their status as a founding partner of The Travel Corporation’s Conservation Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 2008. So far, the Foundation has committed over $2 million to help underprivileged communities and support sustainable tourism around the world.

In 2011, TTC’s Conservation Foundation is proud to support the National Trust in its project to build new environmentally sustainable visitor facilities at Northern Ireland’s iconic World Heritage listed Giant’s Causeway. Deemed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Giant’s Causeway features intricate basalt stone columns left by volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago. The new facilities will provide a greater interpretation of the headland and better access trails so that visitors can explore more of this mythical and breathtaking place. The National Trust is a charity reliant on membership fees, donations and legacies to protect and open to the public over 350 historic houses, gardens and ancient monuments in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. To learn more, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Other Travel Corporation companies who are now using recycled paper for the body of their brochures are Insight Vacations, Contiki, Busabout, Creative Holidays, AAT Kings, Milestones, and Brendan Vacations.
