A natural phenomenon in Chichen Itza, Mexico

Every year in September, hundreds of visitors come together during the autumn equinox at Chichen Itza, Mexico to watch a spectacle of shadow and light on the steps of El Castillo (Kukulkan pyramid).

Equinox, meaning equal night, is the time of year when the hours of day and night are the same. This only happens once in autumn and again in late March, known as the spring equinox. The iconic Mayan archaeological site of Chichen Itza is the only place in the world where you can see the natural phenomenon come to life.

Late in the afternoon the sun projects triangles of light created by the angle of the sun and the northern edges of the pyramid’s steps. Simulating a snake-like effect, the shadow gradually descends to the jaws of the serpent’s head carved at the base of the pyramid, leaving onlookers awestruck. Ancient Mayan legend believes this is the Kukulkan serpent making his way to the Well of Sacrifice nearby.

This year, the autumn equinox at Chichen Itza officially happens on 22 September but the spectacle can be seen a day or two either side, lasting for around 45 minutes.

Trafalgar’s Treasures of the Yucatan itinerary can take you to visit the ancient city of Chichen Itza in 2012. And you won’t have to worry about fighting the crowds to get in either, as the hotel you’ll stay in is ideally located right next to the ruins and has its own private entrance.

Discover the insider’s view with Jordan Allen

I’ve always loved to travel, but what I enjoy more is sharing my passion for travel with others. I’m Jordan Allen and I’ve been a Trafalgar Travel Director for seven years. The best part about my job is seeing guests’ eyes light up when they see something beautiful for the very first time, a truly Kodak moment!

My specialty is national parks, particularly in western USA. From exploring America’s first national park Yellowstone to admiring the vast panoramic views of the Grand Canyon and all the parks in between, you name it I’ve seen them all! If you’re a nature buff like me, you’ll love Trafalgar’s Scenic Parks Explorer which takes you on an insider’s discovery through some of the best national parks in the west including Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde and of course the Grand Canyon.

When I travel you’ll never see me without my camera and a recipe book. Why a recipe book? If you go on a Trafalgar vacation you’ll know why! We often dine with locals during our Be My Guest dining experience and this is where my book comes in handy. I can’t help but jot down cooking tips along the way because not only do you savor regional cuisine, but you also learn a lot too.

My top travel tips are:

  •  Try everything once, you might be pleasantly surprised
  • When shopping, if you see something you like snap it up and don’t think twice as you may not go back the same way, and don’t be afraid to ship it home
  • The best way to get a feel for the local way of life is to walk – you’ll notice more on foot

If you’re interested in discovering the national parks of western USA in 2012 with me or one of our other Travel Directors, visit www.trafalgar.com

City insider: Top 10 boutiques in Paris

On a Trafalgar tour you can expect to see all the top sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Cathedral, but if you’re going to have an unforgettable holiday in one of Europe’s most fashionable capitals, you’ll want to look the part - it is Paris Fashion Week soon after all!-  so do take advantage of Paris’s many unique boutiques.

As well as our personal favourite Paris past-times, such as taking a scenic cruise on the Seine River, admiring Impressionist art at Musée d’Orsay, a visit to the Fragonard Perfumery and Museum, and an excursion to Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles (one of the world’s grandest, with its spectacular ornamental gardens) here is our pick of the top 10 boutiques in Paris, so you can spend, spend, spend!

1. Kookai Stock, 82 rue Réaumur, 2nd, Metro Réaumur-Sébastopol, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 7.30pm.

As you’d expect from a boutique nestled in the tailoring district of Paris, Kookai Stock features a large shopping space filled with past-season garments with discounts as big as 70% off. Let the super friendly staff help you pick the perfect Parisian top for a mere €9.

2. Chanel, 31, rue Cambon. 75001, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 7pm.

It wouldn’t be right to have a top 10 shopping list for Paris without mentioning Chanel. It may be right out of most visitors price range, but a trip to Paris would not be complete without a least a short window-shop or browse of the designer brand which is the essence of chic Paris.

3. Saint-Ouen Flea Market, 140 rue des Rosiers 93400 SAINT-OUEN, Paris.
OK, it’s not quite a boutique, but Saint-Ouen Flea Market has so much to offer the shopper who has it all – for a fraction of the price. Originally the Market was a trading spot which joined Paris and Saint-Ouen in the 1800s, born when the traders grouped together to sell their curious wares. Head here for unique souvenirs and bargain vintage trinkets. It may be open every day, but weekends tend to be much busier.

4. Agnes b., 6, rue du Jour, 75001 Paris. Open Monday to Friday from 11am to 8.30pm.

For a boutique that Paris is famed for, head to the urban Agnes b., the original of which is on rue du Jour. Shunning advertising, Agnes Trouble, who started her shop in the 1970s. chooses instead to support young designers and artists through her in-house galleries, giving the Agnes b. boutique a boho feel.

5. Christian Louboutin, 38, rue de Grenelle, Paris. Open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm.

Christian Louboutin is a name we’re all familiar with, owing to the Parisian shoe designer’s oh-so-sexy yet still super comfortable high heels, which are cherished the world over. Visit the Christian Louboutin boutique in Paris to see kooky yet sumptuous style, and if you’re feeling particular caught up in the romance of Paris, perhaps you’ll purchase a pair.

6. Parfums Frederic Malle, 37, rue de Grenelle, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm and Sunday 12am – 6pm.

No trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s perfumeries, and which better boutique than one of the city’s oldest, and just over the road from Christian Louboutin. Have a spritz of the classic designer scents and you might even want to buy some as a very chic souvenir.

7. Printemps, 102 Rue de Provence, 75009, Paris. Open from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 8pm.

Printemps is by no means a secret, but many visitors to Paris may overlook the vast department store, but that would be a mistake. Printemps’s impressive art nouveau building is filled to the top with France’s favourite fashion, lifestyle and cosmetics brands. Our tip: head to the top floor cafe for unrivalled views of the Eiffel Tower.

8.  Kiliwatch, 64, Rue Tiquetonne, 75002, Paris. Open from Monday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm.

Men in tow may be yearning for a seat (or hearty French lunch) by now, but the most stylish among them are probably after a slice of Parisian style for themselves. Male shoppers should head to Kiliwatch for a great range of vintage menswear. Of course, there’s plenty of women’s vintage fashion in Kiliwatch too!

9. Monoprix, 21 Avenue Opéra, Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 9pm.

If you’re on a budget during your tour of Paris but would still like to dip into the city’s effortless style, then a visit to Monoprix is essential. As ‘the French version of Marks & Spencers’,  you can expect great-value essentials that are perfect for travelling in, and are excellent quality as well as unique.

10. Comptoir des Cotonniers, 12, Place St. Sulpice, 75006 Paris. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm.

For the ultimate in effortless Parisian chic, head to Comptoir des Cotonniers, where you’ll find elegant essentials which are at much more affordable prices than most of Paris’s famed boutiques and designer names.

After shopping in chic boutiques and elegant department stores, just sit in an outdoor café and watch the world go by – it’s just like a fashion show! And when the sun goes down, there is still more than enough to keep you busy. Parisian nightlife is truly legendary. Perhaps try a cabaret at the Nouvelle Eve or a champagne show at the Moulin Rouge or wander through the Latin Quarter and dine out in Bohemian Montmartre.

Don’t forget Giverny, the home and gardens of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet or visit Disneyland Paris located just outside the city. If you have already visited Paris, then you know why we are inviting you back to discover one of Europe’s most beautifully planned cities.

The Romance of Rail Travel

What do Brief Encounter, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and the poet John Betjeman, all have in common? The answer: they’ve all immortalised train journeys and helped cement the romance of rail travel in popular culture. With much-loved books and films like The Railway Children playing a memorable part in childhood for many, it’s not hard to see why this romantic view of the railway endures today.

In Britain, the advent of train travel during the Industrial Revolution gave cheap transport to the masses, meaning that many were able to go away on holiday for the first time. But latterly, train travel has been sadly overlooked by the rise of budget airlines, which dispassionately ferry millions of passengers from A to B each month. However, the golden age of the railways now looks set to make a comeback, with train tours once again becoming increasingly popular as a holiday option.

Train travel isn’t just about getting from A to B; the journey itself is as much a part of the holiday experience as the ultimate destination. Advocates for travelling by train enthuse about the dramatic landscapes they have travelled through, offering views that they wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity to see. Fellow passengers are equally intriguing: where are they from, where are they travelling to, what is their story?

Trafalgar tours allow you to discover a range of destinations from around the world by train, so you too can embark on a romantic railway-based adventure.

On our Canada’s Rockies tour you travel aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train from Banff to Vancouver via spectacular glaciers, canyons and rivers. If it’s an exhilarating train tour you’re after, you can’t do much better than our Mexican Copper Canyon tour – billed as ‘the most exciting train journey in the world’. Known as the ‘Train in the Sky’, the railway took just shy of 100 years to construct, and there’s no better way of seeing Mexico. Your tour will give you unparalleled views of a series of stunning canyons, culminating at the Copper Canyon which is a whopping four times the size of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

For train tours of Europe, the Glacier Express offers spectacular Alpine views like no other, steaming through Switzerland across no fewer than 291 bridges. Alternatively, embark on our Contrasts of Italy tour and explore this beautiful country on a breathtaking train journey from Rome, through Florence and up to magical Venice.

For something a little different, discover Scandinavia and Russia by train from Copenhagen to Moscow. You’ll journey through mystical forests, picturesque meadows, scenic lakes and snowy landscapes, stopping to see incredible palaces and innumerable other cultural treasures along the way.

From the Rockies to the Alps, Trafalgar puts the world’s most magnificent railways at your disposal: so what are you waiting for?

Eat, Pray, Love: Travel to Italy

Here at Trafalgar we’re always on the lookout for movies about travelling to share with you, and this month we’ve been particularly enjoying Hollywood’s most recent offering.  Following the success of Elizabeth Gilbert’s autobiographical novel Eat, Pray, Love, you can currently see Julia Roberts gracing the big screen adaptation of this hugely popular book.  Charting the author’s experiences in Italy, India and Indonesia, the story is an inspiring tale of self-discovery and has earned millions of fans from around the world.

The first section of the story – ‘Eat’ – is devoted to Italy, a country famous for its fabulous cuisine, stunning cultural sites and glorious sunny climate. With sumptuous scenes of Italy’s incredible capital city, Rome, the success of the book and film is boosting the city’s already thriving tourist scene, making it this year’s must-visit European destination.  If you too feel inspired to take a Rome holiday, read on for our guide to some of the Eat, Pray, Love film locations you can see on a Trafalgar tour of Rome…

Piazza Navona

This beautiful sun-soaked piazza is an essential stop on any Rome tour.  Once the setting for intense Roman athletic contests, its atmosphere is now rather more sedate.  Watch the world go by as you enjoy a glass of wine in one of the restaurants at the edge of the piazza, and make sure you stop to admire Bernini’s mighty Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi – the Fountain of the Four Rivers.  With an assortment of local artists selling their work, it’s also a great place to pick up a souvenir of your visit.

San Crispino Gelateria

Believed by many to offer the best ice cream in Rome, San Crispino is unlike any other ice cream shop you’ll see in the Eternal City.  Offering a range of delectable flavours stored in silver vats, the ice cream is served in cups of varying sizes, and its location just round the corner from the Trevi Fountain means that you can savour the delicious taste of San Crispino’s superior gelato with a view that’s second to none.  Our favourite flavour is caramel and meringue – what will yours be?

Trevi Fountain

Arguably one of Rome’s most famous and romantic monuments, the vast Fontana di Trevi dwarfs its small piazza with cascades of turquoise blue water and an imposing neo-Classical façade.  It took thirty years to construct, finally being completed in 1762 and drawing in the crowds ever since.  Tradition has it that throwing a coin into its waters will ensure your return to Rome.  We’re certain you’ll want to come back!

The Pantheon

The most complete building surviving from antiquity, you’re guaranteed to find the Pantheon an incredible sight to behold.  Its vast dome bears a large round opening which means that the building is, to a degree, open to the elements, and during Rome’s occasional downpours the sight of raindrops falling down to the marble floor is impressive.  You’ll also see the remains of the great painter Raphael are interred here, marked by the moving words:  “Here lies Raphael, by whom Nature feared to be outdone while he lived, and when he died, feared she herself would die.”

Villa Borghese

For a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of Rome’s crowded streets, head to the gardens of the Villa Borghese.  Art lovers can admire paintings by the likes of Caravaggio and Titian in the Galleria Borghese, one of the most famous art galleries in Rome, and afterwards stop for a rest in the shade of Rome’s characteristic umbrella pines.  Don’t forget the beautiful view of Piazza del Popolo with its impressive twin churches flanking the main thoroughfare, the Via del Corso.

If Eat, Pray, Love whet your appetite for all things Italian, our tours of Italy offer a wonderful introduction to this beautiful country.  Follow in Elizabeth Gilbert’s footsteps in Rome, and venture further afield to other famous Italian cities such as artistic Florence and enchanting Venice.

The four Fashion Week capitals of the world

The glamorous week-long event that is Fashion Week takes place all over the world, but most importantly it dominates the ‘fashion capitals’ that are London, Milan, New York and Paris. Here’s a quick look at these fancy cities, and what makes them so fashion-fabulous!

1. London

In London you have the coveted Oxford Street, Regent’s Street and King’s Road, which are filled to the brim with designer shops which help give London its stylish label. Londoners don’t just dress in the latest designer clothes though; they’re also known for being more eccentric in their styles than the other fashion capitals, so look out for more alternative looks on the locals on your London tour. Places to go for more unique clothing include Portobello Road and Spitalfields markets.

2. Milan

Milan is Italy’s shopping paradise, so it comes as no suprise that Fashion Week is held in the handsome city of Milan. First established in 1958, the most important shows in Milan are the Milano Moda Donna and Womenswear. Milan is famous for its classically glamorous styles – but in typically cool Italy, would you expect anything less? Shop in areas like Piazza Santa Spirito or the winding streets of the Oltrarnos for quirky gifts that are exquisitly made.

3. New York

Everyone wants to go to New York in the United States, and one of the biggest attractions is its world famous shopping. From the mighty Bloomingdales to the designer boutiques along Fifth Avenue, New York has it all. But did you know that in 1943, the first New York Fashion Week was held to distract from French fashion during World War II, of which industry workers could not travel to. Aren’t we glad they did; now crowds at New York Fashion Week are so large that shows are strictly invite only.

4. Paris

Paris is known for its natural chic style, whether it’s the lithe design of the Eiffel Tower or the effortless outfits donning the Parisians. Paris is the obvious home for Fashion Week and has long been its central hub, and today remains one of the most exciting Fashion Weeks in the world. This year designers such as Balenciaga, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Chanel and Louis Vuitton showcased their beautiful collections in Paris, one of the most fashionable as well as romantic cities that you can travel to today.

The festival presents a plethora of popular music, ranging from classic, folk and jazz to world famous pop and rock acts, including Vanessa Paradis, Fares Karam, Julio Iglesias, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Mika and Norah Jones. We’ll certainly be sipping a glass of champagne to smooth crooner Jamie Cullum who is playing on 20 August as well as the sublime opera from Roberto Alagna which will make for the fabulous  finale of the festival, in true spectacular Monte Carlo style.

Paris Garden Tours: stroll through the city’s green spaces

Parispark

Your trip to Paris will undoubtedly include all the big sightseeing spots such as the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Élysées, but if you’re a country dweller at heart or if you’ve got green fingers when at home, you’ll probably be most curious about the 400 plus parks and gardens that are peppered across Paris.

You’ll also appreciate spending a little quality time away from the crowds of tourists whilst on your Paris tour and one of the simplest and cheapest way to do this is with a gentle stroll around Paris’s many beautiful parks.  Luckily there are plenty of walking tours of the Gardens of Paris which are ideal if you have a spare afternoon on your trip. Below are a few of our favourite green spaces to wile away an afternoon or two.

Pretty Pere-Lachaise cemetery in the 20th arrondissement was created by Napolean Bonaparte as part of his 19th century revamp of Paris, and features thousands of trees. Of course, you also spend time in the serene graveyard where you can spot world famous residents such as Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Balzac.

Pere-Lachaise cemetery

Parc André-Citroën, which lies in the 15th arrondissement next to the Seine was created by the landscape designers Giles Clement and Alain Provost. And yes, it is named after the man who manufactured the Citroën car, and the park actually used to be where the car factory stood! On a walking tour of this geometrical, modern park, you’ll be whirled around the garden’s green spaces and explore wild spots, pretty fountains and immense fully working greenhouses.

paristree

Further out in the 12th arrondissement next to the Bibliotheque and the River Rheine, is the Parc de Bercy, which was once a buzzing wine market. Stroll the smooth lawns here and admire the rose gardens (with 95 varieties of roses), vineyards and orchards for a peaceful glimpse of Paris’s green heart. We’re also fond of the labrynth and the charming vegetable patch which was cultivated by the school children of Paris!

It really does pay to take some time out and enjoy the spectacular scenery and ambience afforded by Paris’s pretty parks.  Which is your favourite park in Paris, or anywhere in Europe for that matter? Let us know below!
